Richard E. Derrick, DMD, FAGD

For over 30 years, Dr. Richard Derrick has been providing quality dental care for his patients in Mendham and the surrounding communities. He enjoys restoring the mouths of patients from age three to senior citizen so that they have a beautiful smile. Dr. Derrick takes pride in having at least one fourth-generation patient and many third-generation patients that still have sealants in their teeth that were placed when they were six years old. He takes pride in changing many young fearful children into great dental patients who look forward to coming to the dentist.

Dr. Derrick and his dedicated staff have been providing a “show and tell” ice breaker experience to several of the local nursery schools. Each year, several hundred three- and four-year-olds are introduced to dentistry in a very loving and friendly setting provided by our staff. It is always a fun-filled experience for everyone.

Education

Dr. Derrick received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Susquehanna University and his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. Following his graduation from dental school, Dr. Derrick interned for one year at the US Naval Hospital in Chelsea, MA, where he was trained in oral surgery and prosthetics under board-certified dental officers. After graduation, he was stationed at the large dental clinic at the US Naval Base in Guantanamo, Cuba for two years, where he did extensive work in crown and bridge and endodontics.

After returning home and receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy, Dr. Derrick set up a private practice in Westfield, NJ. He relocated his family dental practice to Mendham in 1974 with an emphasis on prevention and cosmetics. In 1985, he received his fellowship from the prestigious Academy of General Dentistry. He was certified for using the soft tissue laser in 1997.              

Continuing Education

Dr. Derrick has a love for continuing his education and believes that only the best dentistry can be accomplished for his patients by learning and using the latest technology and materials. He has been a member of the Academy of Comprehensive Studies study group since 1979. This group of 150 dedicated dentists meets monthly from September through June to listen to outstanding lecturers on various subjects in dentistry. He is also a member of and attends seminars and lectures throughout the year provided by the New Jersey Dental Association, the American Dental Association, the Tri-County Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Outside the Practice

Dr. Derrick and his wife, Carol, met as students at Morristown High School and have lived in Mendham since 1970. They have two wonderful boys, Richard Jr. and Meade, two loving grandchildren, Morgan and Richard III, and two daughters-in-law, Linda and Jennifer. They all spend a lot of time at the Jersey shore together, where they sail and bike. Dr. Derrick has enjoyed athletics throughout his life. He played varsity baseball and football in college, and football, softball, and volleyball while in the Navy. He enjoys working out regularly at the fitness center, reading history, spending time with his family, and watching his grandchildren play sports. He has also served on the Mendham Township Tree Protection Committee for 16 years.
